POPE AND MERRILL CAPTURE INDIVIDUAL TITLES
South Carolina Wins The Team Title
A Day For Aces
As 92 boys and girls made their way to the tee Monday morning to begin round 2 of the 2020 edition of the Carolinas Georgia Junior Championship, they were met with a sunny day of cold temperatures hovering around the 40 degree mark. It did not take long for things to heat up with action on the course. Word traveled fast that Zach Adams of Charleston, had aced the 3rd hole on the Chester side. Then another ace by Reed Lotter of Savannah on the 2nd hole on the Vintage side made the news around the course just as Zayne Hilderbrand of Gainesville was retrieving his ball from the cup on the 6th hole on the Vintage side for the third hole in one of the day.

As aces were being made, the battle for individual titles were being waged on the boy’s side by two good friends from South Carolina. Elliott Pope from Lugoff and Matthew Hutto from Blythewood, were playing partners and locked in a battle for the title. As first round co-leaders, Josh Lendach and Parker Highsmith, were struggling, Hutto and Pope were carving out bogey free 3-under par 33’s on the Chester nine to share a two shot lead heading to the back nine over Tyler Dechellis from Clayton, North Carolina. Pope’s front nine would include an eagle on the par 5 sixth hole on Chester. After both players parred the 10th and 11th holes, they reached the par 5, 12th hole. Pope would make birdie and Hutto would bogey the hole, giving Pope a 2 shot lead with 6 holes to play. Another bogey by Hutto on the next hole would give Pope a 3 shot lead with 5 to play. Hutto would birdie the 17th hole to get back within 2 shots, but pars by both players on the final hole would give Pope his title.

On the girl’s side, first round leader, Ava Merrill from Johns Creek, held off the challenge of Maria Atwood from Holly Springs, and Kimberly Shen from Alpharetta, to capture her title by one shot over Atwood. Shen fired a second round 75 to go with her first round 79 to challenge for the title. Warner Robbins’ Mailey Buzzell, fired a second round 75 to tie Shen for the low round of the day. Merrill’s key to victory was her 3 birdies during her final round. Two of those birdies were recorded in her final 4 holes.

The team competition was captured by South Carolina. The team victory is the first South Carolina victory since 2013. Team scores were: South Carolina – 1797, North Carolina – 1808, and Georgia – 1827.

Thanks to all the players, parents, volunteers, coaches, and Mount Vintage staff for another successful event.
